Why use a UL Listed Enclosures?

Over the years, Nema Enclosures has produced thousands of custom enclosures that are UL508A listed and individualized for each customer’s needs. Oftentimes, customers require a UL listed enclosure because:

  • Customer or Industry Requirements
    • End-User Specifications: Some customers, especially large industrial clients, require UL-listed enclosures as part of their purchase requirements.
    • Industry Standards: Certain industries (e.g., oil & gas, food processing, hazardous locations) may mandate UL certification for compliance.
  • Electrical Code and Regulatory Requirements
    • NEC (National Electrical Code) Compliance: If your panel is installed in a jurisdiction that enforces NEC, a UL listing may be required. NEC Article 409 requires industrial control panels to be listed or evaluated by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), such as UL. NEC Article 110.3(B) states that electrical equipment must be installed and used according to its listing and labeling instructions.
    • OSHA Requirements: OSHA often requires control panels and enclosures to be NRTL-certified for workplace safety.
    • AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction): Local electrical inspectors may require UL listing as proof that your enclosure meets safety standards.
  • Environmental Conditions & Safety Risks – if your enclosure is exposed to:
    • Outdoor weather → May require UL 50/50E for environmental ratings.
    • Heavy washdowns (food processing, pharmaceuticals, etc.) → May require UL Type 4X or UL 50E stainless steel enclosures.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a global independent safety science company with more than a century of expertise innovating safety solutions from the public adoption of electricity to new breakthroughs in sustainability, renewable energy and nanotechnology. As a global safety science leader, UL Solutions helps companies to demonstrate safety, enhance sustainability, strengthen security, deliver quality, manage risk and achieve regulatory compliance. Recall, that NEMA ratings are self-declared, but UL certification requires independent 3rd party testing. If you are using a pre-certified enclosure and modifying it, you may need UL follow-up certification to maintain compliance. When Nema Enclosures fabricates custom enclosures, we can work with you to ensure that the design meets UL criteria and include certification.

Build America, Buy American Custom Electronic Enclosures: Nema Enclosures Qualifies for the Build America, Buy America Act

The Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) has reshaped how federally funded projects are executed across the United States. At Nema Enclosures, we take pride in producing BABA-compliant custom electronic enclosures, meeting the rigorous standards defined by this transformative legislation. As an American manufacturer, we are fully equipped to be your premier partner for high-quality, NEMA-rated enclosures.

Further, with the rising threat of tariffs on imported goods and ongoing global supply chain challenges, now is the ideal time to source domestically produced electronic enclosures. This proactive step will help minimize costs, avoid supply disruptions, and ensure compliance with federal requirements.

Understanding the Build America, Buy America Act
The BABA Act ensures that materials used in federally funded infrastructure projects are produced domestically. This includes items such as steel, iron, and manufactured products. The act promotes domestic manufacturing and establishes guarantees for the quality of materials used in critical infrastructure projects.

Our Expertise in Sheet Metal Fabrication
At Nema Enclosures, our mission is to provide quality enclosure solutions individualized for each customer. Our products are essential in maintaining efficient and reliable industrial processes. Here’s why our work is BABA-compliant:

  1. Domestic Sourcing of Materials
We source our raw materials, such as sheet metal and other components, from U.S.-based suppliers. This ensures that the foundational materials we use meet the requirements outlined in the BABA Act.
  2. Manufactured Entirely in the USA
All our manufacturing processes, from cutting and bending to welding and assembly, are conducted in our facilities in Houston, Texas. This guarantees that every product we deliver is proudly made in America.
  3. Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
By producing domestically, we not only support American jobs but also adhere to stricter environmental and quality standards compared to many international competitors. This commitment aligns with BABA’s goal of fostering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure.

Additional Value in Sourcing Domestically
Beyond security of supply concerns, there is also a very pragmatic reason to consider sourcing domestically: it’s costly to “ship air”. Shipping large custom enclosures that are high in volume is both expensive and impractical due to the cost of transporting unused space. Furthermore, there is a greater risk of damage in longer transits. By sourcing domestically, you can significantly reduce shipping expenses while ensuring faster delivery times and minimizing risk of shipping damage.

Enhancing Efficiency with Custom Enclosures for the Heat Tracing Industry

Heat tracing systems are used to maintain or raise the temperature of pipes and equipment, and they are prevalent in numerous industrial applications. Each system is unique, and custom control panels play a crucial role in optimizing for client’s specific requirements. At Nema Enclosures, we understand these needs, and we have decades of experience specializing in custom enclosures in support of heat trace applications. Here are a few options we offer to support our customers:

1. Precision Cutouts for Optimal Heat Dissipation

Efficient heat management is critical in heat tracing. We provide precise cutouts on both sides of the control panel enclosure which allows seamless mounting of heat sinks. This feature supports effective thermal management, reducing the risk of overheating in high-power applications.

2. Custom Door Cutouts for Operator Interface Devices

Access to operator interface devices, such as Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs), is essential for efficient control. Our team customizes cutouts on control panel doors to accommodate HMI and other operator interface devices, making interactions streamlined and accessible. Additionally, we offer a door-on-door solution that allows access to the PLC without needing to open the main enclosure door. This feature ensures that essential controls remain accessible while maintaining the enclosure’s integrity and security.

3. Branding Options for Enhanced Visibility

Furthermore, we help our clients showcase their brand and features through custom silk screening on control panels. By incorporating company logos and unique designs on each panel, we enable heat trace suppliers to promote themselves and specific features. This reinforces brand visibility and creates a professional and cohesive look across all installations.

4. Custom Print Pockets for Branded Documentation

Lastly, to further personalize each panel, we offer custom print pockets for documentation, allowing clients to include their branding on critical information sheets or manuals.

At Nema Enclosures, we recognize that each project has unique requirements, and we pride ourselves on delivering tailored solutions for the heat tracing industry. Each of our control panel enclosures is designed to meet specific operational needs while elevating both functionality and brand presence for our customers. Contact Nema Enclosures today to discuss your custom enclosure needs for heat tracing systems. Let us help you achieve operational excellence and elevate your brand.
